The Need: Keep manure out of the ground and protect the water

When David VanderLinden put together his manure management plan, he knew how important it was to keep the manure out of the ground and protect the water. “We have water quality issues in our area,” says VanderLinden who milks 75 cows in Greenleaf, Wis. “We decided to build an above-ground manure storage structure. We had previously hauled manure daily, but now with the Slurrystore we have room for one million gallons of slurry and a 12-month storage capacity. We’ll be able to empty the Slurrystore once a year in the fall, helping to eliminate run off issues.”

Just completing his new manure management plan in August 2006, VanderLinden chose a 95x19 Slurrystore structure over a concrete pit due to better appearance and security. A lagoon was not an option due to sandy, lighter soils and bedrock close to the surface. VanderLinden was able to receive EQIP and watershed conservation money to assist the project.
